Rapporteur au Conseil d’Etat (1988-91), il devient Délégué du club Capitale économique auprès de la Chambre de commerce d’industrie de Paris de 1991 à 1993. De 1993 à 1994, Bertrand-Pierre Galey rejoint le cabinet de Simone Veil alors ministre des Affaires sociales, de la Santé et de la Ville, puis de 1995 à 2000, celui de François Léotard alors ministre de la Défense. Pendant un an (1994-95), il dirige la Caisse nationale des monuments historiques et des sites devenue, en 2000, le Centre des monuments nationaux. Après avoir conseillé pendant deux ans le directeur général adjoint de la Caisse des dépôts et consignations pour le tourisme et la culture, Bertrand-Pierre Galey était depuis 2002 directeur général du muséum d’histoire naturelle. Il succède dans ces fonctions à Jean Gautier, directeur, adjoint au directeur général des patrimoines, chargé de l’architecture au ministère de la Culture et de la Communication depuis 2006.
