L’Etat, VNF (Voies Navigables de France), les conseils régionaux, ainsi que d’autres collectivités, conduisent un partenariat constructif autour du canal des Deux Mers pour restaurer la voie d’eau, améliorer les conditions d’accueil des usagers et contribuer à la préservation de l’environnement et du patrimoine. Signée le 16 juillet 2009 à Agen, la charte interrégionale du canal des Deux Mers exprime les ambitions de ce partenariat pour valoriser le canal et les territoires traversés.Le schéma de développement du canal des Deux-Mers doit concilier les enjeux de tous les acteurs et la dimension patrimoniale de l’ouvrage. Il sera présenté fin 2012. Le projet de protections complémentaires aux abords du canal du Midi répond à la demande du comité du patrimoine mondial. La France doit redéfinir les limites des « zones tampons » et les protections aux abords du canal et des rigoles pour en préserver la qualité paysagère. Les contours de la zone sensible et de la zone d’influence ont été précisés, afin de modifier la « zone tampon » initialement définie par l’inscription Unesco. VNF a présenté un point de situation concernant le chancre coloré du platane et le programme complémentaire d’abattage engagé cet été pour faire face à la croissance du nombre d’arbres atteints. L’établissement a fait part de l’avancement des premiers chantiers de replantation dans le département de l’Aude.
