Le musée de la Grande Guerre du Pays de Meaux sera inauguré le 11 novembre 2011 par Jean-François Copé, Président de la Communauté dAgglomération du Pays de Meaux, en présence du Président de la République, Nicolas Sarkozy. Le musée de la Grande Guerre présentera sur 3000 m2 lextraordinaire collection construite au fil des années par Jean-Pierre Verney, spécialiste reconnu de la Première Guerre mondiale, et aujourdhui propriété de la Communauté dAgglomération du Pays de Meaux. Projet denvergure conduit depuis 2005 par Jean-François Copé et les élus du Pays de Meaux, le musée a pour ambition de devenir un haut lieu de la mémoire nationale et de sinscrire parmi les grands équipements culturels et historiques de France et dEurope. Plusieurs milliers de visiteurs sont attendus. Inscrire le musée sur ce lieu, sans perturber le paysage, tel était lenjeu pour larchitecte Christophe Lab qui a su créer un lieu dhistoire en perpétuel dialogue avec lun des plus emblématiques lieux de mémoire du territoire. Choisi pour donner un écrin à la dimension du projet, larchitecte a privilégié des volumes exceptionnels. Le nouvel équipement muséal sétend sur 7000 m2 : 3000 m2 dédiés à lexposition permanente, 300 m2 pour les expositions temporaires, 2 salles pour accueillir les scolaires et développer des ateliers de découverte, 1 auditorium de 115 places, un centre de documentation comprenant plus de 6000 ouvrages, un café, une librairie et une boutique. La construction répond aux besoins dun grand musée du XXIe siècle. Un comité scientifique a été constitué autour de lhistorien Marc Ferro pour construire le discours historique du musée.
