Le musée Pierre Soulages ouvrira ses portes en 2011 à Rodez. La conception architecturale du futur musée ayant été confiée début 2008 au cabinet d’architecte espagnol RCR, il sera l’un des rares musées au monde à être bâti du vivant de l’artiste et en collaboration étroite avec lui. Visant à honorer l’artiste Pierre Soulages et à servir la mémoire de son uvre, le futur musée sera tout de noir vêtu’ (grâce à ses façades en acier corten autopatinables), reprenant, illustrant et déclinant les fondamentaux de l’uvre de Pierre Soulages : lumière, matière, couleur, atemporalité. En contrepoint de la diversité des supports, des techniques et des matières utilisées par l’artiste, l’architecture du musée fera appel à un registre extrêmement limité de matériaux : le verre et l’acier. Le projet du musée Soulages a été créé à l’initiative de l’Agglomération du Grand Rodez sur les bases d’une exceptionnelle donation consentie par Pierre et Colette Soulages en septembre 2005. Celle-ci représente l’une des plus importantes donations en France, depuis la seconde guerre mondiale. La nouvelle équipe dirigeante de l’agglomération du Grand Rodez, issue des élections municipales de mars 2008, a récemment confirmé sa volonté de poursuivre et de mener à bien ce projet de première importance pour Rodez et sa région.
